On the Side by @SexiLexiCullen - a collaboration between SexiLexiCullen and MelissaMargaret.
Summary: Carlisle wants to be happy. With the holiday season approaching, he's left in a bitter and somber mood. His only source of enjoyment comes in the form of fantasizing about his son's girlfriend, Bella. Canon Coup. AH. MelissaMargaret/Me collab o/s

The story starts in Carlisle’s office at the hospital and the four principal characters are Carlisle, Esme, Edward and Bella, while we have a brief reference to Alice and her boyfriend Jasper in what is a well-timed, festive-themed one shot. But not in the way you’d expect. They’re not the happy family we’ve become accustomed to reading about.

Carlisle is a doctor, cynical and disheartened, but still kind at heart. It’s Christmas. Everyone is happy and full of cheer... except for him. His family isn’t a family. Esme gets through the day with a handful of pills, and in the authors words “Edward doesn't really give a fuck about anyone or anything, except for his girlfriend Bella.”

Most people would read that last line and immediately assume they know what’s going to happen. But pretty early on, you realise that when they say Edward doesn’t give a fuck, he really doesn’t, except when making sure that Bella does what he wants.

It’s a contrast that we’re not prepared for, and that shocks the system, yet draws you in to see how it all plays out. Their backstories are a little more complex and intertwine beautifully, yet it’s written in such a way that you understand and can identify with Carlisle’s disinterest as the holiday season approaches.

After all, who would want to be trapped at home in such a suffocating environment?

She didn't like the sound of that and threatened to kill herself again. So the nice guy in me kept my mouth shut, and I didn't bring it up again.

My daughter Alice doesn't care either, has no time for her father, or her family. She's sixteen and is so much more mature than her older brother Edward. She goes about her business, only caring about Alice, and I commend her for it. If she's not in school, she's out with her boyfriend Jasper.

Bella is always around though, being there for Edward, and he uses her for that purpose. Bella lets my son treat her horribly, and she is his support system, his biggest supporter. If he's having a bad day, a down day, he'll lash out at her over something asinine. "How many times do I have to tell you, I hate mustard? God, you can be so stupid". And Bella will just apologize, make him another sandwich, while that fucker grins.

Besides me, Bella is the sanest person in my house, and she's not even a member of my family.

There's a big surprise.

We're all fucked up, each and every one of us, and I wanted to warn Bella and Jasper of that fact, but I couldn't do it.

Yet this fic isn’t all about the issues that we sometimes face in real life.

Enter Bella. She makes her appearance in this story and is, quite literally, a breath of fresh air for Carlisle. She’s with Edward because she truly does love him, and can’t seem to understand why Carlisle is encouraging her to break up with him.

And again, it’s not for the reasons you’d expect. Carlisle isn’t lusting after his son’s girlfriend; he wants a better life for his son’s girlfriend. One where she puts herself first for once and takes the scholarship that offers her an escape from their dysfunctional family.

"Bella." I got down onto my knees, ready to beg her to leave my son. "I know you think you love him, but take it from me. I know from experience. If you stay with Edward, he will bring you down."

And then things start to hot up, to the reader's enjoyment.

It appears to be purely innocent. A graze of their fingertips, a brush of their legs at dinner. But these accidental touches only lead to the two of them having to battle against a back log of lust and sexual frustration with the partners in their lives.

Which leads to a hot, passionate and perfectly timed M scene. The desperation and need they both possess only serves to make the scene even more satisfying as they give in to their desires, if only for that moment. Neither of them wants to cheat on their respective partner, but at the same time, it’s something that we all agree they need.

They’re conflicted, and the raw emotions pouring off of the page make you root for this duo right the way through. Neither of them take their actions lightly, and don’t use the state of their private lives as an excuse.

"But it probably shouldn't happen again," she whispered, finishing my thought.

I hated to admit it, but it really shouldn't. I was married, and Bella needed to go away to college. I desperately hoped she would realize how much more she deserved from this world and would leave my son, but I would never want her to stay in Forks for me. She had so much potential that should never go to waste.

Overall, this fic is sharp and sweet and deeply rooted in reality. You can lose yourself in it, yet once it’s over, you’re left with a sense of authenticity, rather than the sensation of waking up from a dream like some other fics tend to create.

The story is one to fall in love with, as well as the characters. They’re well written and thought out, yet still retain the essential qualities that defined them in the original books.

In my opinion, this is a definite must read!
